Compounded Dermatology Topical Formulations
Formulary reviewed by Benn Bluestein-Veyra, M.Sc. Organic Chemistry · Founder, ExaVeyra Sciences
Three minoxidil-based scalp solutions and two creams, each prepared against a prescription for an individual patient. Selection, suitability and counseling are prescriber matters; this page covers what the pharmacy can prepare and how it is dated.
The defining procurement fact in this category is that its beyond-use dating splits in two. Two scalp solutions carry a short date and a single-unit ceiling, while the third solution and both creams carry the long date, and the per-fill ceilings follow the same split.
Supply and documentation
- Lead time
- 3 to 5 business days from order to delivery, covering both preparation and transit.
- Coverage
- licensed in 33+ states, with licensure confirmed for your destination before a first order ships
- Testing
- Endotoxin and sterility testing on every sterile batch
- Every formulary page is checked by a chemist. ExaVeyra was founded by an M.Sc. organic chemist, and specification data is verified against the source catalog rather than reproduced from a vendor sheet.
- One verified account covers biologics, 503A compounded formulations and devices, with a single account manager rather than a separate vendor relationship for each.
Available Formulations
5 preparations with 5 strength and format options, as topical solutions and creams. Beyond-use dates on the label: 35 to 180 days.
What the pharmacy can prepare. This is not a dosing recommendation, and it does not indicate suitability for any patient. Beyond-use dates are assigned at compounding and printed on each label; the shortest applicable limit governs.

Two dating profiles set the reorder plan
The two finasteride-containing solutions are short-dated with a ceiling of one unit per fill. The tretinoin solution and the two creams carry the long beyond-use date with a five-unit ceiling.
Practices carrying both groups usually reorder the short-dated solutions on their own line and the long-dated preparations on a slower cadence. Setting that up once keeps every unit arriving with useful life ahead of it.
Read the table per row
The beyond-use date and the per-fill ceiling are stated for each entry separately in this category, and they differ. Each row carries its own, so read them per entry.
Finasteride appears only as a topical component
Finasteride is present in this category only as a component, at a fraction of a percent, in two of the scalp solutions. Oral finasteride tablets are commercially available as a finished product and are not compounded, so they are not part of this formulary.
The prescriber determines which preparation is appropriate for a given patient, and the pharmacy prepares what the prescription specifies.
Five preparations in two vehicles
- A minoxidil and finasteride solution at 5 percent and 0.1 percent, in 60 mL.
- A minoxidil and tretinoin solution at 5 percent and 0.025 percent, in 60 mL.
- A four-active solution adding azelaic acid at 12.5 percent and ketoconazole at 2 percent to the minoxidil and finasteride base, in 60 mL.
- A ketoconazole and niacinamide cream at 2 percent and 4 percent, in a 30 g jar.
- A methylene blue and estriol cream at 0.0064 percent and 0.003 percent, in a 30 g jar.
Percentages are fixed per formulation and are not selectable at order time. The four-active solution is the most complex preparation in the catalog by component count, which is reflected in both its dating and its per-fill ceiling.
Container formats and storage
The scalp solutions are supplied in 60 mL containers and the creams in 30 g jars. Store as stated on the container label. None of these are cold chain. Keep each in the supplied container so the lot record and the dating on the label stay intact.
A jar or bottle prepared for one named patient is dispensed to that patient and is not shared treatment-room stock. Practices moving from retail skincare lines usually adapt the workflow within a cycle or two.
The prescribing information for oral finasteride states that it is not indicated for use in women, and sets out the warnings and adverse reactions a prescriber is expected to review before prescribing. [1]
USP General Chapter 795 sets the standards for compounding quality nonsterile preparations, which is the chapter these solutions and creams are prepared under, and became official on 1 November 2023. [2]
FDA notes that compounded drugs are not reviewed by the agency for safety, quality or labeling before they reach patients, which is why the prescriber and the pharmacy carry that responsibility between them. [3]

Request the full formulary and pricing
The pages on this site list a representative selection. Verified practitioners receive the complete named formulary, current pricing, available strengths and formats, and the identity and credentials of the compounding pharmacy that prepares each preparation.
Access requires a valid NPI. Compounded formulations are prepared by our 503A pharmacy partner, a compounding pharmacy licensed by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. We verify the number against the national registry, and our team reviews each practice before releasing the formulary, which is why pricing is not published openly: these are prescription preparations supplied to licensed practices rather than consumer products.

Frequently asked questions
- Why do some entries here allow only one unit per fill?
- The per-fill ceiling tracks the beyond-use date, so every unit arrives with useful life ahead of it. The figure for each entry is in the table.
- Can the four-active solution be prepared without one component?
- Modified formulations are assessed case by case. Send the change you need to your account manager and the pharmacy will confirm whether it can compound and document it.
- Why is the methylene blue percentage so low?
- That is the formulation the pharmacy prepares, and the figure in the table matches the container label. We can get you the formulation rationale from the pharmacy on request.
- Where are the copper tripeptide solutions and creams?
- Copper tripeptide is a peptide, so those preparations are listed in the peptide formulary with their own pages and tables.
- How should reorders be scheduled?
- The beyond-use date is specific to each formulation, so reorders are calculated from the program the clinician determines is appropriate for the compound and the patient. A clinician can schedule reorders as each individual case requires, within maximum fill periods that vary by formulation. Request the full formulary for the details of each preparation.
- What documentation ships with an order?
- Lot identification on the container label, with a Certificate of Analysis available on request. Practices with their own documentation requirements should raise them at account setup so the pharmacy can confirm what it is able to supply.
Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not verify their safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed. Each is prepared by a licensed 503A compounding pharmacy and dispensed against a patient-specific prescription. Formulations are supplied to NPI-verified licensed practitioners only. A Certificate of Analysis and lot documentation are available on request. This page is for informational purposes only: nothing on it is medical advice, a dosing recommendation, or a statement that any formulation is suitable for a given patient. Selection of any formulation in this category, including counseling on the labeling that applies to its components, is the responsibility of the prescribing practitioner.
