When an order reaches a Maui or Wailea practice
A Maui carton leaves Florida frozen and reaches a Maui address through the carrier network, inside the window shown in the panel above. Storms can close the road south before the carton reaches a South Maui suite. During the March 2026 kona storm, the County reported floodwater rescues in South Maui, South Kihei Road closed north of Waipuilani and all of North Kihei Road shut.
The County was still responding to Tropical Storm Lala damage on 3 September 2026 when Hurricane Lowell brought a Wind Advisory with gusts up to 55 mph. The County notes that hurricane season lasts through November.
On calmer weeks the delays are state road work. HDOT posts Maui lane closures weekly, and its lists have included roving daytime closures on Kaahumanu Avenue (Route 32) in Kahului. HDOT's weekly Maui lane closure list also covers Honoapiilani Highway (Route 30), the road a Lahaina address depends on. A carton that cannot reach a South Maui suite stays in the carrier network until the road opens. A placed order leaves Florida as usual.
Cold-chain receiving at a Maui address
September is the hottest month at Kahului Airport, with a normal high of 90.0°F. A shipper left on an open entry walk or a sunny loading area loses dry ice quickly. Ask the driver to bring it to a staffed front desk, and name the person who signs.
Before each storm the County asks residents to ready their homes for extended power outages. A Wailea or Kihei practice storing exosome material plans the same way for its freezer. Once on Maui, vials stay at -20°C in long-term storage and at 4°C after thawing, as the manufacturer's handling instructions set out. Dry ice vents carbon dioxide, so the carton is opened at the front desk rather than in a back storeroom. The signer notes the time, the lot and whether ice remains. A carton that lands with its dry ice gone is replaced.
Rules that apply to a Maui order
- Construction, alteration, repair or use of a Maui suite needs a County DSA building permit, applied for through a MAPPS Customer Self Service account. The Development Services Administration is at 110 Alaihi Street, Suite 214, Kahului.
- Permits tied to the 2023 wildfires, the March 2026 flood or Lala go through the County's separate Disaster Recovery Building Permit path. A rebuilt Maui suite should not be listed as a delivery address until that permit work is complete.
- Business on Maui carries the County of Maui surcharge of 0.5% on activities taxed at the 4% General Excise Tax rate. The Hawaii Department of Taxation applies it from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2030.
- Evacuation zones and warnings for Maui addresses come from MEMA through MEMA Alerts and Genasys Protect. Genasys Protect saves up to 10 locations per user, so the receiving signer can follow the clinic's zone as well as their own.
Areas near Wailea on the Maui lane
Kihei, Kahului and Lahaina all sit inside the County of Maui, so the same building permit office and county surcharge apply in each, but their roads behave differently. Kihei shares Wailea's South Maui roads and its kona storm closures. Kahului's Kaahumanu Avenue (Route 32) appears on HDOT's weekly Maui lane closure lists. Lahaina, in West Maui, depends on Honoapiilani Highway (Route 30), which those lists also cover.
