When an order reaches a Chicago practice
Frozen exosome shipments arrive in Chicago by carrier on the Illinois lane, within the transit window printed in the panel above. Compounded preparations come separately: the pharmacy partner fills each prescription and sends it from Texas on its own timetable, to the office or straight to the patient.
Deep cold is what stops Chicago deliveries. On 30 January 2019 O'Hare fell to -23°F, and the Postal Service halted delivery throughout the city for that day and the next. When the National Weather Service in Chicago posts an extreme cold warning, a practice with a shipment due should expect slower carrier routes and plan its order for after the cold breaks. A placed order is never paused for weather; a parcel already moving sits at a carrier facility until routes run again.
Grant Park events close downtown streets for days. Ahead of the 2026 Chicago Marathon on Sunday 11 October, closures began around the park the Thursday before, and the course itself shut from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on race day. For Lollapalooza 2026, Columbus Drive between Monroe and Roosevelt was closed from 27 July to 3 August. Loop and South Loop offices near the park should check these dates against expected arrivals.
Cold-chain receiving at a Chicago address
Downtown and Streeterville suites usually take deliveries at a building dock or a lobby mail desk, then move them upstairs by freight elevator. The weak point is the wait between dock and suite. A dry ice shipper does not mind a January loading dock, but a radiator-warmed mail room, or an August dock where O'Hare normal highs top 82°F, shortens its life. Sublimating dry ice also gives off carbon dioxide, so the box belongs in a ventilated space.
Give us the building's dock hours, any freight elevator booking rule, and a named recipient with the hours they are on site. That person confirms dry ice is still present, notes the arrival time and lot, and moves the vials to a freezer: -20°C for storage and 4°C after thawing, per the manufacturer. A box delivered with its dry ice gone is replaced. Other delays may earn a refund depending on whether the material held temperature.
Rules that apply to a Chicago order
- The City of Chicago does not require its business license for physicians, physician assistants or nurses licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. A Chicago office that also runs a retail counter may still need a city license for that part of the business.
- The Chicago Department of Buildings must issue a certificate of occupancy before a space changes occupancy, so a storefront being converted to a clinic suite should not be given as a delivery address until that certificate exists.
- Inside city limits, emergency orders come from the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications. Evanston, Wilmette, Winnetka and Glencoe fall under Cook County Emergency Management and Regional Security instead.
North Shore towns near Chicago on the same lane
Evanston, Wilmette, Highland Park and Lake Forest ride the same Illinois lane as Chicago, yet each handles a new office differently. Evanston requires annual registration from state-licensed medical offices and will not let one open before it holds a certificate of occupancy or passes a fire department inspection. Wilmette issues a yearly business license priced by interior square footage and due 1 January. Highland Park, in Lake County, asks every commercial tenant to register within 30 days of opening, while Lake Forest has no business license and instead issues a certificate of zoning compliance.
Chicago and the North Shore questions
- Our Streeterville suite receives through a shared loading dock. What should the account record?
- Record the dock entrance, the hours the dock is staffed, whether the freight elevator has to be booked, and the name of the person who carries the box up. Add a second name for days the first is out. A frozen shipper can wait on a cold dock, but not for an afternoon in a heated mail room, so the account should say who collects it and how fast.
- The Chicago Marathon closes streets near our Loop office. Should we change when we order?
- The course itself closes only on race day, a Sunday, but streets around Grant Park start closing on the Thursday before. A Loop or South Loop office expecting a box that week should time the order so it lands before Thursday or after race weekend, and tell us if the building dock will be unreachable.
- We run offices in the Gold Coast and in Highland Park. Do the two sites follow different local rules?
- Yes. The Gold Coast office is in Cook County and inside Chicago, where state-licensed physicians do not need a city business license. The Highland Park office is in Lake County and must register with that city within 30 days of opening. One account can carry both delivery addresses, and each lot is logged against the site that signed for it.
